Description of this course
NHR501 is an intensive introduction to the foundations of the philosophy of non-violence. This course provides students with general knowledge about the origin of each term and its contemporary uses, and about key concepts and historical conditions that paved the way for the inception and development of these terms. This course was built to accustom students to the areas of non-violence and to their applications at the educational, social, political and professional levels as well as to the scientific fields that have evolved out of these applications. Among the objectives of this course, is an in-depth study of the thoughts of Gandhi, where students will be introduced to the Gandhi legacy of the “a-himsa” and the meaning of the No in the non-violence. In parallel, they will also be introduced to the main scientific theories related to the basic question about violence and human nature. Students will be trained with active methods and at the self-level on the positive expressions of a non-violence communication.
Students will prepare articles about non-violent philosophy and priniciples (Gandhi, Thoreau, Tolstoi, Capitini, Russell, Fromm, Simone Weil, De La Boétie, Muller, Slaybi...).
